ArtKit vs. Saatchi Art for Independent Artists

Saatchi-style marketplaces can bring buyer traffic, but an owned storefront gives artists more control over margins and relationships.

Commission versus storefront economics

Large art marketplaces and gallery-like platforms can take 35% to 50% once commission, listing, promotion, and payment fees are counted together. On a $2,000 original, that range can mean $700 to $1,000 leaving the studio before the artist reinvests in materials, framing, photography, or shipping support.

ArtKit uses a lower platform fee posture: 5% plus Stripe processing. Stripe processing is typically 2.9% + 30 cents per card transaction. On that same $2,000 sale, the platform fee is about $100 and Stripe processing is about $58.30.

Control matters for premium work

Collectors buying original work often want context: process notes, exhibition history, press, commission availability, and direct studio contact. A marketplace product page rarely gives the artist full room to tell that story.

An owned ArtKit storefront can carry biography, portfolio, shop, commissions, shipping guidance, and direct contact in one branded surface.

How to use both channels

Use marketplace exposure to meet new collectors, but treat your ArtKit site as the canonical source of truth for available work, custom inquiries, and studio updates.
